Search for a “silk pillowcase” and half the results are actually satin. They look similar in a photo, but they’re fundamentally different — and the difference shows up on your hair, your skin and your wallet.
Silk is a fibre. Satin is a weave.
This is the part most listings gloss over. Silk is a natural protein fibre spun by silkworms. Satin is a weave — usually made from polyester or nylon — that mimics silk’s sheen at a fraction of the cost. So “satin pillowcase” almost always means “polyester pillowcase that looks shiny.”
What that means for you
- Hair: Both reduce friction versus cotton, but real silk is gentler over time and less likely to trap and tug.
- Skin: Silk is breathable and doesn’t wick moisture, so it won’t soak up your night cream the way polyester satin can.
- Temperature: Silk regulates heat — cool in summer, never clammy. Polyester satin tends to trap warmth.
- Longevity: Quality mulberry silk ages gracefully; cheap satin pills and loses its sheen.
How to judge real silk: momme count
The honest signal is momme (pronounced “mummy”) — a measure of silk’s weight and density. For a pillowcase, look for 22 momme: substantial, durable, and luxurious without being heavy. If a listing won’t tell you the momme count or the fibre, that’s your answer.
Our Pure Silk Pillowcase is 22-momme mulberry silk, stated plainly — because the proof should be on the label, not in the marketing.
